Performing the Poem with Javon Johnson, Ph.D
Taking seriously the claim that performance is inherently a communicative act, this workshop focuses on performing poetry as an intimate dialogue between the performer and the audience. This workshop will focus on the body as a performance instrument and how to use it to express the emotions embedded within the given poem. “Performing the Poem” will begin with a critical discussion about the politics and functions of performance (as related to poetry), but will mostly be an on-your-feet workshop, which means we will participate in performance exercises, as well as performing poetry for the workshop’s participants. Poet-performers who are interested in this workshop should have the poem (or two) they are interested in working with memorized, and the poet should bring five copies of the poem, typed and printed, to the workshop.
